Weekend traffic: All delays are weather permitting

(WXIA) -- Crews will continue working on the usual road projects this weekend -- as long as the weather cooperates.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is also warning drivers of heavier traffic than normal, due to school systems beginning their spring breaks.

"We apologize for the delays, and there will be big delays," GDOT District Construction Engineer Shun Pringle said in a release. "We understand that this is a spring break for some folks, but so are the next three or four weekends."

Weekend work begins at 10 p.m. Friday on the Interstate 85/Georgia 400 Interchange. Four left lanes of I-85 south from a half-mile north of Clairmont Road to North Druid Hills Road will be closed between midnight and 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, and from midnight to 5 a.m. Monday.

Pringle said all lanes will reopen Monday at 5 a.m. The closures are due to overhead sign replacements.

Expect heavy spring break traffic this weekend

(WXIA) -- Many colleges and universities will begin their spring breaks this weekend, which may contribute to heavier traffic than usual on metro Atlanta roads.

In addition to more people on the road, Georgia Department of Transportation crews will be out and about, working on scheduled projects.

GDOT engineer Shun Pringle said the largest project will be sign installation on Georgia 400 south between Peachtree Road and Sidney Marcus Boulevard. One right lane will be closed daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Work will also continue on the Ga. 400/Interstate 85 Interchange project. Several roads will be affected all weekend, including Cheshire Bridge Road, Sidney Marcus Boulevard and the Buford-Spring Connector.

From 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly, three lanes in both directions of I-285 will be closed for sign replacements between Riverside Drive and Peachtree Dunwoody Road.

Weekend roadwork planned for I-85, Ga. 400, Connector

(WXIA) -- With a warm weekend on the horizon, the Georgia Department of Transportation plans to perform some much-needed roadwork throughout north Georgia.

Closures and delays can be expected on a number of major roads and highways.

"Plan ahead -- I can't say it enough," GDOT District Construction Engineer Shun Pringle said in a release. "If you plan ahead, you can avoid some potentially heavy delays."

Some notable roadwork includes:

Downtown Connector
Two right lanes of I-75/85 north near University Avenue will be closed for pavement work Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

I-285
Three lanes will be closed in both directions between West Paces Ferry and Roswell roads for sign replacements. All work will take place overnight -- from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Roadwork planned for Downtown Connector, other highways

(WXIA) -- The Downtown Connector is one of several metro Atlanta highways to be affected by weekend roadwork.

Georgia Department of Transportation engineer Shun Pringle said three left northbound lanes of Interstate 75/85 will be closed nightly for sign work. The closures will happen between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Pine Street.

Three left southbound lanes will also be closed nightly at Freedom Parkway for bridge painting.

All Downtown Connector work will happen at night; Pringle said the interstate will be completely open during daylight hours.

However, some daylight work will occur on I-85 in both directions between Clairmont and Lenox roads. Crews will work on highway signs, forcing them to close two left lanes in each direction. Drivers traveling through the area should plan ahead for possible delays.

Weekend roadwork to affect many major highways

(WXIA) -- Sign work, bridge maintenance and lane closures are all on the Georgia Department of Transportation's weekend agenda.

Work will continue on the Buford-Spring Connector in Atlanta from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily. One right southbound lane will be closed between Lindbergh and Monroe drives.

Pacing will occur on Interstate 20 in both directions between Highway 5 and Liberty Road, just west of Atlanta. Drivers can expect brief delays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

One new project this weekend involves I-285 east at I-75 in Cobb County. Two left lanes and the ramp to I-75 north will be closed overnight, and ramp traffic will be detoured to I-75 south, Cumberland Boulevard and then back to I-75 north. GDOT said the ramp will be open during the day.

As usual, drivers can expect single lane closures around the Ga. 400/I-85 Interchange, especially on Cheshire Bridge Road, Sidney Marcus Boulevard and the Buford-Spring Connector.

GDOT launches Twitter feeds for specific highways

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Transportation has created 16 new Twitter accounts for traffic alerts throughout the state.

Each feed is tailored to a specific highway or region, according to GDOT spokeswoman Chata Spikes.

Spikes said only serious accidents will be tweeted, as opposed to every single stall and fender bender on the highways.

The feed for traffic on I-20 east of Atlanta is @GDOT_I20_E_GA.

Message from GDOT: Turn off your sprinklers!

(WXIA) -- The Georgia Department of Transportation is reminding north Georgia residents to be mindful of temperature drops and to turn off their sprinkler systems.

GDOT released this statement Wednesday morning:

Every winter, we have icing issues due to automatically-timed sprinkler systems left on overnight in freezing temperatures. They can create a very hazardous condition for motorists the next morning.

Automatic sprinkler systems are often timed to operate at night, and when spray from the sprinkler is blown onto the road or water drains onto the road, black ice is formed, creating a hazard for motorists.

The Department urges residents and businesses to take a moment and ensure that automatic sprinkler systems are turned off. With sub-freezing termperatures on the way, motorists are cautioned to be on the lookout for icy patches or black ice, especially early in the morning.
