No one hurt in Stone Mountain train-car wreck Tuesday afternoon

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA (WXIA) -- DeKalb County authorities were investigating an collision between a train and a car on South Stone Mountain-Lithonia Road in Stone Mountain on Tuesday afternoon. 

Police said the collision happened on the CSX tracks near Wellborne Road. DeKalb Fire-Rescue said there were no injuries reported. 

The car was towed from the scene, and the train resumed its travel after authorities completed their investigation at the scene.


Stonecrest Mall set to reopen following shooting

Witnesses said they heard at least two gunshots. Shopper Steven Hendricks also said there was obvious tension between two rival groups leading up to the shots.

"I saw a bunch of kids running and screaming. I thought it was a fight. Next thing I know I hear bullets flying and glass shattering," he said. "I thought, I need to go get the kids because if something happened to them I wouldn’t be able to live with myself."

As if the shooting wasn't enough, the excitement continued even after the shooting -- this time with a fire alarm.

Just hours after the shots were fired, firefighters were called to the mall for a small fire that started at a makeup counter inside one of the stores.

The fire was quickly put out and no one was hurt.

Bobby Boal may be 88 years old, but still remembers the days spent with her husband driving around DeKalb County looking at potential investment properties. She says they made sure each lot could be built on and remembers thinking the little stream on the Cypress Ridge Circle lot would be a beautiful asset.


Gwinnett police release identities of suspects, victim in Days Inn shooting

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Gwinnett County police released Thursday the identities of three suspects involved in a late-November shooting at a Stone Mountain Days Inn.

During the Nov. 24 incident, the three suspects burst into a room at the Days Inn that the victim, 52-year-old Juan Casillas of Concord, N.C., and three Hispanic males were occupying. They then shot Casillas in the head, and used his car to drive to a Conyers Waffle House. 

Police did not release an update on Casillas' condition.

Gang member pleads guilty in death of baby

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – A gang member charged with killing a baby in DeKalb County has been sentenced to life plus 20 years in prison.

Devin Thomas plead guilty Monday in theMay 2014 shooting death of 9-month-old Kendarious Edwards. His plea allowed him to avoid the death penalty.

Thomas, 20, will be eligible for parole in 50 years.

Intruder shot and killed during apartment invasion

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- One person is dead following a home invasion early Monday morning.

According to authorities, a 28-year-old male forced his way into an apartment and assaulted a woman inside. The intruder was confronted, shot and killed by the male occupant of the apartment.

The incident took place at the Mountain Lake Apartments located off of North Hairston Road. The apartment's occupants all remained at the scene when police arrived.

The intruder has yet to be identified as the investigation continues.
