Reading is SWEET! campaign ends Monday

Reading is SWEET! campaign ends Monday

ATLANTA -- October is both National Book Month and National Cookie Month, so why not combine the two into a sweet book drive?

The second annual Reading is SWEET! National Book Drive, sponsored by Great American Cookies, runs through Monday, Oct. 31.

Throughout the month, the stores collected new and gently used books to be donated to local charities and public libraries. Everyone who donated a book received a free cookie.

"Last year's Reading is SWEET! program was a huge success, thanks to the efforts of our store owners, customers and community partners," said Jenn Johnston, chief marketing & operations officer for GFG Management, which manages Great American Cookies. "We're excited to continue the event for 2011 and can't wait to see how many books we can collect and how many cookies we can give away."

Powerball skyrockets to $203 million

ATLANTA -- Powerball is growing by leaps and bounds.

Saturday's jackpot has soared to an estimated $203 million after no one matched all the winning numbers in Wednesday's drawing.

One Georgia Lottery player in Tifton won $30,000 Wednesday. Three in Lilburn, Lithonia and McDonough, respectively, each won $10,000.

The Powerball jackpot has rolled 12 times since Kathy Scruggs of Lithonia won $25 million Sept. 14.

Powerball offers two payment options: the $203 million jackpot prize paid over 29 years in 30 graduated payments, or a cash option of approximately $123 million.

Tickets are $1 per play.

'Wrong' ticket nets Lithonia woman $25M

'Wrong' ticket nets Lithonia woman $25M

LITHONIA, Ga. -- A store clerk's mistake led to a Lithonia woman's $25 million lottery win.

Kathy Scruggs matched all of the winning numbers in the Sept. 14 Powerball drawing. She claimed her prize Monday at Georgia Lottery headquarters.

"I asked for a Mega Millions ticket and the lady gave me a Powerball ticket," she said of the lucky mistake. "I just took it anyway. So I bought Powerball and Mega Millions."

Scruggs discovered her good fortune the night after the drawing and woke up the entire house to help her celebrate.

"We were screaming and hollering, and everybody came running," she said. "I could not believe it."

After working a seasonal job during prom time, the 44-year-old Scruggs had been "looking and looking and looking" for steady employment.
