Staples holding Make 15 Seconds of Fame Happen contest

(WXIA) -- Atlanta-area Staples customers have the chance to appear in a nationwide commercial for the office supply chain.

Staples is holding a Make 15 Seconds of Fame Happen contest. Kids, teens, parents and grandparents can enter by submitting their best videos of them doing the "shopping cart dance."

The contest winners will star in a national back-to-school campaign, and will also receive a $250 Staples gift card.

To enter, visit staples.com/shoppingcartdance. Entrants must film themselves dancing to the commercial song, which is available on the website.

Submissions will be accepted until Monday, June 23 at 5 p.m.

Kroger raises $232K for Children's Miracle Network

(WXIA) -- Kroger customers in metro Atlanta recently showed that they are a charitable bunch.

During the final two weeks in May, shoppers raised $232,000 for the Children's Miracle Network through the Miracle Balloons promotion.

For only $1, a customer could purchase a paper balloon to hang in a local Kroger. All proceeds from the fundraiser went directly to Children's Miracle Network hospitals and health networks, such as Children's Hospital of Georgia in Augusta and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

"Kroger customers consistently show their care for our communities by constantly going above and beyond with their charitable donations," Glynn Jenkins, spokesperson for Kroger's Atlanta division, said in a release. "Through their support of the Miracle Balloons program, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of children."

Stone Mountain man wins $15K with lucky pick

ATLANTA – A Stone Mountain man secured a $15,000 prize from a Georgia Lottery second chance promotion. Michael Jones, 58, was selected as a big winner in the Georgia Lottery’s $1 & $2 Play It Again Second Chance Promotion.

He won his prize this week in Atlanta.

As a monthly cash prize winner in the Georgia Lottery’s $1 & $2 Play It Again Second Chance Promotion, Jones won a chance to select one envelope from 20, with prizes ranging from $5,000 to $100,000.

He chose envelope No. 14 and won a $15,000 prize.

“Seven is perfect, and 14 is double,” the lucky winner explained.

Jones described his experience as overwhelming.

“It’s a little something extra, and I can’t ask for more than that,” he said.

Jones has five adult children and eight grandchildren. He retired five years ago, having worked 32 years for Georgia Power.

With his windfall, Jones anticipates restoring a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado.

(USA TODAY) -- Brick-and-mortar retailers have been suffering from slow economic activity for years, as well as from increased competition from online retailers. The rise in store closings is a prominent sign of their struggles. Weakened companies cannot afford the real estate and personnel costs that go along with supporting hundreds of unprofitable locations. The clearest proof of the problem was RadioShack's recent decision to close more than 1,000 stores.

RadioShack is hardly alone. During that last several years Gap has closed 20% of its locations. Even Macy's, which has forecast strong earnings and is considered the most successful of the mid-market retailers, closed stores recently.

Restaurant cashier cashes in $942K Fantasy 5 prize in Lithonia

ATLANTA – A Fantasy 5 jackpot prize is the icing on the cake for a lucky restaurant cashier in DeKalb County. Lamant Graham of Lithonia, who is expecting his first child this spring, matched all five numbers from the Jan. 29 Fantasy 5 drawing, winning the $942,117 jackpot prize.

Graham, 28, claimed his prize Feb. 10 at Georgia Lottery headquarters in Atlanta.

The only boy in a family of girls, Graham used his sisters’ birthdays as his lucky combination.

He purchased the ticket at Three Brothers Food Mart, 1544 Wellborn Road in Lithonia.

“I found out that I’d won while checking the numbers on my cellphone,” he said. “I didn’t want to get too excited.”

In disbelief, Graham decided to wait before claiming his prize.

“I kicked back and chilled first,” he explained. “I had to think about it. I’m happy to win.”

Winning numbers from the Jan. 29 Fantasy 5 drawing were: 6-13-21-25-26.

(WXIA) -- Twenty years ago, Pizza Hut delivered its first-ever pizza to be ordered over the Internet.

Now, the pizza chain is celebrating this milestone by offering a half-off online deal for customers.

Medium and large Pizza Hut pizzas will be 50 percent off when ordered online now through Jan. 10.

Pizza Hut has also launched Hut Lovers, a loyalty program that provides members with exclusive deals.

A large pepperoni, mushroom and extra cheese Pizza Hut pizza was the first physical good ever purchased online, according to Pizza Hut chief marketing officer Carrie Walsh.

"We want to celebrate the fact that before consumers could buy books, clothes, music or vacation packages via the Internet, they could place an online order for a Pizza Hut pizza," Walsh said in a statement. "We're doing so by giving back to our customers who have helped us lead the way with digital innovations over the last 20 years."

But according to new research, the biggest share what comes out of your holiday wallet actually goes to ... groceries and restaurants.

New data from Card-Linked Marketing leader Cardlytics -- collected from millions of U.S. households over the past two years -- shows what consumers actually spend their money on during the holiday season.  When it comes to holiday shopping Americans are spending 24% of their budget on groceries followed by restaurants and apparel.  Toy purchases are actually at the bottom of the list.
