STONE MOUNTAIN | Thieves clean out church

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- It was a devasting blow for the Kingdom City Church in Stone Mountain.  Just about everything was stolen from a downstairs youth center while the congregation was meeting in the sanctuary upstairs.

"They stood on the chairs and took all the copper," said Co-Pastor Mona Harper. "They took our kitchen utensils. Took apart all of the air conditioning units and heating units and took our broiler, and microwave."

The thieves did not stop there.

They took a refrigerator, stove, microwave and broilers.

But then they went a step further.

"They took crayons, magic markers, and DVD's," Harper said. "They left the Bible and the Scrabble game, but they took the board games. Things that we use to get kids off the street, they just took it."

11Alive's Help Desk got right on the phone to replace what we could.

Within an hour, The Home Depot offered a new refrigerator, a new stove and microwave.

And The School Box Stores offered to replace all the stolen school supplies.

It was welcome news for co-Pastor Mona Harper, who isn't going anywhere.

"If somebody could come in on a Sunday night while church is going on and literally rob a church, not only rob it but endanger the people and possibly could have set this place on fire, I believe that my work here is more needed than it's ever been," Harper said.

Her congregation agrees.
