2 cats die in Gwinnett house fire

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- A woman escaped injury in a fire at her Stone Mountain home Wednesday evening, but two cats died in the blaze.

Gwinnett County Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said crews arrived to find smoke and flames shooting from the split-level wood frame house on Nalley Drive shortly before 11 p.m.

Rutledge said firefighters quickly contained the fire to the living room where it started. The blaze caused heavy damage to contents in the room and sent extensive smoke and heat throughout the structure.

The occupant was alerted to the fire by a blown circuit breaker and was able to escape unharmed.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
