Tree crashes through Lithonia home
News

LITHONIA, Ga.. -- A decades-old oak tree fell on a home along North Shore Drive in Lithonia on Monday.

"The last thing I thought I would hear is that a tree fell on my house," Tai Harmon explained.

Luckily she wasn't home at the time. No one was.

However, her neighbors couldn't miss the sound of the fall.

"I heard, you know when people cut trees and you hear that big whoosh, and then the earth shook," neighbor Tina Winters said.

The tree destroyed Harmon's bathroom and left cracks in the ceiling. The fire department ordered her to stay out of the home Monday night.

"They turned off the electricity, and they turned off the gas because the tree fell right here where the gas meter is," Harmon said.

The tree was about 90 feet long and was planted in the common area between property lines. Residents believe it is owned by the county.

Harmon feels lucky her neighbors jumped in to tarp the roof and give her a place to stay. She say her roof was just replaced a few years ago from hail damage. She expects this damage to be covered by insurance.
