Stone Mountain Village to dedicate public art

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- A new piece of art at Stone Mountain Village will be publicly dedicated this weekend.

A ceremony honoring the piece and its artist, John Thigpen, will be held Saturday, Jan. 12 at 5:30 p.m.

The art is a double-sided pictoral tribute to the Interurban Street Car that ran between Atlanta and Stone Mountain from 1913 to 1948. The 15 x 6-foot artwork is made of aluminum panels and features a granite base made from a piece of Stone Mountain.

The piece of art will be dedicated on Main Street between the Visitors Center Caboose and the Stone Mountain Municipal Building. A reception will be held at the ART Station on Manor Drive immediately after the dedication.

AKA holding peace rally for middle school students

ATLANTA -- Members of metro Atlanta's chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will hold a peace rally and workshop for middle school students over the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend.

The event will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Ivy Community Center in southwest Atlanta. It is part of the 40 Days of Peace project, which aims to spread service and kindness through the country.

The peace rally and workshop will aim to teach young people about Dr. King's mission, and to raise awareness of crime and crime prevention strategies. Law enforcement members will also give an interactive presentation to encourage children to stamp out gangs and bullying.

Middle school students from several metro Atlanta counties -- Cobb, Cherokee, Clayton, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale -- are expected to participate.

School district to break ground on 3 projects

School district to break ground on 3 projects

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- The DeKalb County School District is about to begin construction projects at three high schools.

Crews will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at Southwest DeKalb High School at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27. The project includes major renovations to the existing building, updates to plumbing and roofing, and building a new addition.

At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, another project will break ground at Miller Grove High School. Construction includes building a two-story classroom addition, as well as renovations to current classrooms.

The final ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at Martin Luther King Jr. High School. The school will build a new 9th grade wing, administrative area and common classrooms.

Fulton partners with DeKalb to 'Get to Zero'

ATLANTA -- Fulton County comprises 10 percent of Georgia’s population and accounts for 54 percent of the state’s AIDS cases.

In recognition of World AIDS Day on December 1, 2012, starting November 27, both health agencies will sponsor events to encourage residents to take control and get tested in a world-wide effort to reach “ZERO New Infections, ZERO Discrimination and ZERO AIDS Related Deaths.  The County has partnered with DeKalb County to provide similar services in order to have the greatest impact on reducing new HIV infections.

More than 2,000 JROTC cadets from 30 metro Atlanta high schools
to participate in historic fundraising effort

On Saturday, November 3rd and Sunday, November 4th, visitors to metro Atlanta Kroger stores are likely to be met by a smiling, uniformed JROTC cadet with an Empty Stocking Fund logo, as more than 2,000 cadets representing 30 metro Atlanta high schools’ JROTC programs will be working outside metro Kroger stores to raise awareness of and contributions for The Empty Stocking Fund, an Atlanta-based, Atlanta-serving non-profit organization that has been providing holiday gifts to Atlanta’s neediest children since 1926.

East Metro Business Expo After Hours to be held Thursday

LITHONIA, Ga. -- The chambers of commerce for Conyers-Rockdale, DeKalb and Lithonia have teamed up to host a business expo this week.

The East Metro Business Expo After Hours will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hilton Garden Inn at Stonecrest.

Members of the participating chambers will have displays at the event. There will also be complimentary hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar.

Everyone is invited to attend. The cost is $10 in advance or $15 at the door.
