Stars and Strikes’ Stone Mountain Invites Community to Grand Opening Celebration on Sat, July 16th

Stars and Strikes’ in Stone Mountain will host a Grand Opening Community Celebration on Saturday, July 16, 2011 from 9AM – 5PM.  Come out and enjoy live entertainment, prize drawings every hour, exciting games,menu specials, face painting, caricatures, jumping castles, “Spare the Bear” (Stars & Strikes’ new mascot), sports mascots, local vendor booths and more! This event is free and open to the public!  Special discounts will be available on activities including $2 twilight bowling, $3.00 boutique bowling, $2.00 balladium and bumper cars. Shoe rental is $2 and arcade games are half price. $2 specials for basket of fries, hot dog, chicken, hamburger sliders, pretzel, nachos and cheese, funnel cake fries and 16oz drinks.

WEEKEND EVENTS: Art Stroll, Yard Sales, Motley Crue and the Indigo Girls

ATLANTA -- There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

This weekend, the Castleberry Hill neighborhood will host their monthly Castleberry Hill Art Stroll at the Castleberry Point Condominiums. This event is sponsored by city councilman, Kwanza Hall and begins on Friday at 7 p.m. This week, the stroll will feature Denise Jackson’s Emerging Art Scene Gallery installations and The Wine Shoe will hold a $10 wine tasting. Food trucks will also be lined up in front of Castleberry Point. The corral will include: Tex’s Tacos, The King of Pops, Westside Creamery and the Pup Truck. The Castleberry Point Condos are located at 327 Nelson Street in Atlanta.

On Sunday, the Grant Park neighborhood will hold their first-ever Community Yard Sale starting on July 10.

Tiffany Roberts is many things to many people: daughter, sister, aunt, friend, wife and mother. Like many women with that level of support uplifting her, Roberts has created an opportunity to turn her talent and passion into an entrepreneurial win. After being laid off in December 2010, Tiffany took a leap of faith and launched her company, Simply Tiffany Soul (www.simplytiffanysoul.com); a platform for her theatrical expressions and a will soon help catapult underground Indie artists in reaching their full potential within the entertainment industry. Following her dreams and aspirations is a fire that just keeps growing inside of her and she wants to share that spark with others that share the same passion. Her goal is to give new artists the tools needed to be successful without as many stumbling blocks as she has had to overcome.

Dekalb County --  (from the desk of Commissioner Sharon Barnes)  DeKalb County Commissioner Sharon Barnes Sutton will host the second annual Youth Empowerment Breakfast, Saturday, July 9, 2011, at the Holiday Inn Downtown Decatur, 130 Clairemont Avenue, Decatur, Georgia 30030.  The breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. and event proceeds will benefit the Youth Leadership Academy.  The attire is business.

LOCAL PROFILE: R&B Scene in Atlanta

ATLANTA – Derived from popular genres of music like jazz, blues and gospel, rhythm and blues was born. Rhythm and Blues music, which is widely referred to as R&B, is unique in that it has the ability to take on many musical identities, at once. Some say the genre was first identified in Harlem, during the Harlem Renaissance, which is known as one of the most prominent cultural movements for African Americans during the 1930’s. However, others think the genre originated in the 1940’s when African Americans began moving to northern cities, creating cultural fusion.  

The music evolved from “race music”, which was an offensive term that referred to the music of African Americans, into jump blues which was known for having a swing boogie, big band sound.
