Salem Middle School Students Commemorate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Today at 7:30 p.m., Salem Middle School students in DeKalb County will hold a candlelight vigil and dedication ceremony in honor of a 12-year paraprofessional at Salem who passed away from breast cancer on July 4, 2010.

Students will take part in this demonstration to commemorate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Salem Middle School teachers, students and parents, as well as members of the paraprofessional’s family (including her daughter, who attends Salem Middle School) will dedicate a memorial bench on the school grounds in her honor as part of the ceremony.

The candlelight vigil and dedication will take place Thursday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. at Salem Middle School, 5333 Salem Road, Lithonia, Ga., 30058.

Stonecrest Farmer's Market Opens October 21st

Consistent with their pledge to become the “greenest” county, the Farmers’ Market at Stonecrest serves to honor DeKalb County’s heritage by expanding its market to a seasonal market and include an urban farm at the edge of the mall, by using bike paths to connect it to nearby historical farms.

On October 21st, the Mall at Stonecrest will hold the ribbon cutting celebration for the new Farmers’ Market at Stonecrest at 5:30 p.m.

Dekalb's Fall Hike & Bike and Greenspace Tour set for Oct. 23 Plus New Trail Opens

Atlanta, GA--  DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer Burrell Ellis invites citizens to lace up their running shoes or strap on their bike helmets and join him at Arabia Mountain for the CEO’s Fall Hike & Bike and Greenspace Tour on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 10:30 a.m. The event will kick off with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 4530 Lyons Rd. in Lithonia to mark the grand opening of a new section of the South River Multi-Use Trail. 

Tom Glavine to Speak at Annual Gwinnett Prayer Breakfast

Atlanta, GA--  Tom Glavine is to speak at the Salvation Army's 4th Annual Gwinnett Prayer Breakfast at 8am on October 29th.  Tickets are now available.

The former Atlanta Braves pitcher is a long time supporter of the Salvation Army and proceeds from the event will benefit its programs for Homeless Families in Gwinnett County.  Tickets to attend the event are $125 per person

Stone Mountain launches Streetscape Phase 1 Project

Atlanta, GA--  DeKalb County Commissioners Sharon Barnes Sutton and Connie Stokes, along with Stone Mountain Mayor Patricia Wheeler, Congressman Hank Johnson, State Sen. Steve Henson, State Rep. Billy Mitchell, and Former Stone Mountain Mayor Gary Peet joined members of the community on Friday, Oct.

2nd Chance Offender Re-entry Program in DeKalb County

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a grant in the amount of $424,852 by the US Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs for the 2nd Chance Offender Re-entry Program.

The 2nd Chance Act Prisoner Re-entry Initiative aids in the funding of local and state governments for projects that help with the transition from incarceration to dealing with other individuals in the workplace and other capacities once released from jail.

The funds from the grant will provide pre-release and case planning, mentoring, housing, education, substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, services to enhance family reunification, job training and readiness, and post-release case management and supervision.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office will be partnering with two non-profit organizations to help implement this program. They are STAND, Inc.

Thursday is DeKalb Employee Empowerment Day

September is Workforce Development month and In continuing the celebration of Workforce Development Month; DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer Burrell Ellis, Board of Commissioners, and various county departments, in collaboration with DeKalb Workforce Development, will host the first ever DeKalb Employee Empowerment Day Thursday, Sept. 30 at 9 a.m.
