DeKalb Celebrates Older Americans Month in May

Lithonia, GA --  During the month of May, DeKalb County will  host activities to celebrate the lives of our older generation.

As part of Older Americans Month, the DeKalb County Human Services Department is seeking DeKalb centenarians near the age of 100 whose stories reflect the need for older Americans to continue their valuable connection to the community. Each year, the Administration on Aging observes Older Americans Month to celebrate the contributions older Americans make to their communities. This year’s theme, Older Americans: Connecting to The Community, highlights the integral role technology plays in helping older Americans live longer, healthier and more engaged lives.

Women will learn the edict: “put self first” to attain greater health, career success and overall well-being at the Seventh Annual Spelman College Leadership and Women of Color Conference, May 11–12.

This year’s conference, “Reset: Sustaining Women for 21st Century Leadership,” offers best practices to help women achieve better personal and professional sustainability. Conference dialogue will address how society’s assignment of gender roles on women, combined with today’s tough economic environment, has led to:

Gwinnett County, GA --  Gwinnett County is celebrating National County Government Month throughout the month of April to highlight county govern­ment programs and services.

The theme for this year's celebration is Serving Our Veterans, Armed Forces, and Their Families.

DeKalb County to Host Showcase, Grand Opening

Dekalb County, GA --  DeKalb County will continue its celebration of National County Government Month with a county showcase tomorrow, April 9, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Northlake Mall, 4800 Briarcliff Road in Atlanta. The county will also host a ribbon cutting ceremony at 12:30 p.m. for the OneDeKalb Neighborhood Resource Center, located on the lower level of the mall near Macy’s.

The showcase brings county departments together in one place, offering citizens an opportunity to learn about resources available through county government.

South River Watershed Alliance to Join Lawsuit against DeKalb County and their dumping practices

Tucker, GA--  (submitted by Green Law) Today, the South River Watershed Alliance (Alliance), represented by public interest attorneys from GreenLaw, took steps to ensure that the DeKalb residents harmed by years of illegal sewer overflows from DeKalb County will have a seat at the table as regulators finalize a deal with the County on how to fix the ailing sewer system. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) have filed a proposed Consent Decree in federal court which outlines a plan to clean up the DeKalb County sewer system. The proposed Decree is the result of the County’s long-term failure to prevent unpermitted discharges of untreated sewage into Snapfinger Creek, South River and many other water bodies in the County.

DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs holding Spring Break Day Camp April 4 - 8

Decatur, GA--  DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs will hold Spring Break Day Camps April 4 - 8, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at all 12 recreation centers. Spring Break Day Camp is the hot spot for kids during the spring break. To embark on the total spring break camp experience, look no further than your local recreation center!

Spring Break Day Camp is a camp for ages 5 -12 and will be held Monday through Friday at a charge of $5 per day. Please make all payments payable by cashiers check or money order to the recreation center of your choice. Participants must provide their own lunch and snack.

DECATUR – DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs will hold Camp Superstars summer camp registration on Saturday, March 26, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at all 12 recreation centers.

Camp Superstars is a summer day camp for ages 5-15 and begins May 31 and ends on July 29. Camp Superstars is held a various recreation centers around the county.

The day camp is held Monday through Friday from 7AM – 6PM. Campers must pay a fee of $55 per week and breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Early registration for this camp is recommended. The registration application is available at http://www.dekalbcountyga.gov/parks. Applications can be printed and returned to the recreation center of choice on March 26 along with first week fee.
