Loganville, GA --  LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is mounting a campaign today (May 31, 2011) to increase the blood supply in local hospitals.  Each of LifeSouth’s regions is challenging the local communities to come and donate blood. 

“Blood donated to LifeSouth stays in the local communities we serve”, said Michael Becker, LifeSouth Georgia Community Development Coordinator.  “Donors know when they selflessly provide blood to LifeSouth Community Blood Centers that they are helping relatives, neighbors and friends in their local areas”.

On May 31st, LifeSouth will have bloodmobiles at 2 Wal-mart locations from 11am-5pm.

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers provides blood and blood products to more than 40 hospitals in the metro area.  Everyone is invited to come and donate.

ATLANTA -- According to The Advocate, the U.S. based national gay and lesbian newsmagazine, Atlanta holds the title of “America’s gayest city” and Gay Atlanta, a subsidiary of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau says that Atlanta is the “epicenter of the LGBT South” but according to Phillip Rafshoon of Outwrite Bookstore, Atlanta is just a “progressive city in a conservative state, that’s in a conservative region of the United States. The city serves as a place where people from small, southern towns can come to be who they want to be” which is why the LGBT community loves to call this city, home.

In the nook that is Tenth Street and Piedmont Road, Outwrite Bookstore has been a staple in the Atlanta LGBT community for about 18 years.

“Hike and Bike” through Davidson-Arabia Mountain

DECATUR, Ga. – Residents biked through a portion of Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve in Lithonia on Saturday, May 14 during the CEO’s Hike and Bike Greenspace Tour.

The walkers and bike riders joined Ellis for the four-mile walk and six-mile bike ride, which began at Candler Murphy Elementary School.

Event sponsors include CH2M Hill, Kaiser Permanente and Bike South.  A drawing for free bicycles donated by Bike South was held during the event, and hike and bike participants also had the opportunity to visit the nature center to learn more about the preserve.

According to DeKalb CEO Ellis, “We have some of the most beautiful green spaces here in DeKalb. Not only is it free, but simply getting out and visiting our parks can have positive impact on our health and the health of county.”

TUCKER, Ga. – Want to fill you tank? Support the DeKalb County Police Athletic League Plus (P.A.L.P) and win a gas card. The P.A.L.P is asking for community support for its Spring Fundraiser.  The P.A.L.P is currently selling one dollar raffle tickets at locations throughout DeKalb County.  Ticket holders will be entered into a drawing for their chance to win a $50, $100 or $250 dollar gas card.

Currently, raffle tickets can be purchased at the following locations:

The drawing will be held Saturday, May 21, 2011 inside the Mall at Stonecrest at 3:00 p.m.  Ticket holders do not need to be present to win.  All monies raised will go towards P.A.L.P initiatives, which support the youth of DeKalb County.

DECATUR, Ga.  – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

The Atlanta Community Food Bank will be hosting Twain’s Spring Fest on Saturday, May 14. The benefit will feature a dance party, silent auction and lots of music. All proceeds from the festival will benefit Twain’s Spring Fest. The Event will be held at Twain’s Billiards and Tap in Decatur. The festival will be located at 211 E. Trinity Place in Decatur.

This weekend, Decatur will host their annual Decatur Garden Tour.  The garden tour will be held on Saturday and Sunday and will feature a number of gardens like the Oakhurst Community Garden, the Nathan and Gena Rawlins’s backyard garden and Woodlands Garden.

DeKalb Adopt-A-Stream partners with Stone Mountain Memorial Assoc. to hold Water Quality Workshops

DECATUR – DeKalb Adopt-A-Stream is partnering with Stone Mountain Memorial Association to host a series of workshops to get citizens involved in learning about and protecting DeKalb County’s water resources. These workshops are designed to train volunteers on how to collect and interpret data, and to learn what impacts DeKalb’s water quality.

The four-part series of workshops begin Saturday, May 14 when attendees will be introduced to Adopt-A-Stream and discover how to conduct a visual survey. The second part will be held on Saturday, June 11 and participants will learn how to perform chemical monitoring. The third workshop will be held on Saturday, July 9 and will focus on biological monitoring. The last of the series will be held on Saturday, August 13 and will train volunteers on how to conduct bacteria monitoring.
