When disaster strikes, we should all take the time out to help those less fortunate.  Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC) is a non-profit organization that helps children, adults and seniors with disabilities. Recently, a natural disaster hit a small town in the United States called Joplin. On May 22, 2011 Joplin, Missouri suffered a massive F5 tornado; leaving thousands of people homeless.  With the assistance of FODAC and Invacare they were able to ship supplies in 24 hours.

The tornado disaster in Joplin has silently removed itself from our television screens and radio stations. But FODAC and Invacare are doing their best to provide help. FODAC does not just drop off materials and leave. They stay and form relationships with the communities that have lost everything. They are creating an atmosphere of hope and longevity.

Many people are familiar with FEMA and Red Cross, but FODAC is determined to help a group of individuals who are overlooked by the masses, the disabled. This group of people are often neglected and lost when natural disasters occur.

The other positive to this organization is that it is based in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Furthermore, sometimes we forget about those with disabilities, but for once an organization has taken its time to support those who cannot fully take care of themselves. Many of you may be wondering what all does FODAC do and how they are funded? FODAC goes to landfills and refurbishes over 180 tons of wheelchairs estimating over $9 million dollars. FODAC helps people nationally and locally; giving handicapped individual’s wheelchairs in Atlanta. This organization is doing a job that many of us overlook.

No good deed should go un-notice. Because of organizations like FODAC and Invacare people have hope. Children, adults and the elderly with disabilities no longer have to worry about how they will get around when they don’t have anything left.  We salute those who help their neighbors in need.

If you are interested in helping FODAC their headquarters is located at 4900 Lewis Roads, Stone Mountain, Georgia, 30038. Or visit www.fodac.org.
