DeKalb to hold neighborhood summit next month

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb County will hold its annual neighborhood summit on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Tucker High School.

The event gives DeKalb residents an opportunity to mingle with local government officials and discuss ways to improve the quality of life in the county.

This year's summit will feature Curbside Consulting, a rotating series of sessions where residents will be encouraged to sit down and ask questions about issues that matter to them.

Curbside Consulting will run from 9 a.m. to noon and will cover several topics:

* Community organizing/building
* Marketing/social media
* Fundraising/grant writing
* Meeting facilitation
* Volunteer/board management
* Program planning and development
* Neighborhood Nexus/community needs assessment

DeKalb police chief honored

DeKalb police chief honored

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander has been recognized for his many achievements over his three-decade law enforcement career.

Alexander was presented with a resolution by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police during its 2014 conference.

"It is an honor and a privilege to receive this recognition from the Georgia Chiefs Association," Alexander said in a release. "It's always humbling to get recognized by your peers."

Alexander has served as DeKalb's police chief since April 2013 and is also president of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.

Recording artists raise money for Habitat for Humanity

ATLANTA -- An upcoming concert at Chastain Park Amphitheater will also support Habitat for Humanity - DeKalb.

O.A.R. and Phillip Phillips will perform at the Atlanta amphitheater on Saturday, July 26 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the non-table show.

Tickets range in price from $35.50 to $40.50 and can be purchased at classicchastain.com.

Habitat for Humanity - DeKalb spokesperson Julie Hopkins said that for every ticket O.A.R. and Phillip Phillips sell on their summer tour, $1 will be donated to Habitat for Humanity. DeKalb partners families and representatives will attend the July 26 show as special guests of the artists.

Kroger raises $232K for Children's Miracle Network

(WXIA) -- Kroger customers in metro Atlanta recently showed that they are a charitable bunch.

During the final two weeks in May, shoppers raised $232,000 for the Children's Miracle Network through the Miracle Balloons promotion.

For only $1, a customer could purchase a paper balloon to hang in a local Kroger. All proceeds from the fundraiser went directly to Children's Miracle Network hospitals and health networks, such as Children's Hospital of Georgia in Augusta and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

"Kroger customers consistently show their care for our communities by constantly going above and beyond with their charitable donations," Glynn Jenkins, spokesperson for Kroger's Atlanta division, said in a release. "Through their support of the Miracle Balloons program, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of children."

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb County Interim CEO Lee May and his wife Robin welcomed a baby girl Friday morning.

Riley May was born at 8:31 a.m., weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces. Both mother and daughter are happy and healthy.

"I give thanks to God for all of His generous blessings," May said in a statement. "I want to thank everyone for their kind sentiments and prayers."

Riley joins big sisters Ryann and Reagan.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- The DeKalb County government was a big hit at this year's Tucker Day festival. Now, the county is bringing its Show on the Road tour to DeKalb Peachtree Airport.

Interim CEO Lee May organized Show on the Road, where government departments create exhibits to give citizens an idea of the programs and services they provide.

Participating government agencies include DeKalb Fire Rescue, the DeKalb Police Department, the DeKalb County Library, DeKalb County Superior Court, DeKalb County Juvenile Court and Keep DeKalb Beautiful.

Show on the Road will be at PDK's Good Neighbor Day Open House Airshow on Saturday, May 17 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The airport is located at 2000 Airport Road in the Chamblee area.

Eat at Chili's to help Tenn. tornado victims

(WXIA) -- Several Southern states were slammed by severe weather earlier this week, including Lincoln County, Tenn., which experienced a devastating tornado.

Those who want to contribute to the community's rebuilding fund can now do so, simply by eating at Chili's.

On Sunday, May 4, more than 60 Chili's restaurants in Georgia and Tennessee will contribute 10 percent of the day's earnings to the Lincoln County Disaster Relief Fund.

Chili's diners can also make monetary donations by adding extra money to their check totals.
