Acting DeKalb County DA Sworn In, Today

Decatur, GA –Javoyne Hicks White has been sworn in as the acting DeKalb County, Georgia district attorney. She assumed the job on Sept. 3, 2010.  

“I look forward to serving as acting district attorney,” said Hicks White. “DeKalb County citizens can rest assured that our office’s talented and committed lawyers and support personnel will continue to provide them with the same level of service they have received during the past five and one-half years.”

Hicks White was one of two existing chief assistant district attorneys who reported to District Attorney Gwen Keyes Fleming. She recently accepted a position as a regional district administrator for the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Piedmont Bank Robber Arrested. Viewer Recognizes Man from ATM Photo and Calls Police

Atlanta, GA-- Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Brian D. Lamkin, FBI Atlanta, in conjunction with the Atlanta Police Department, announces the arrest of the following individual, responsible for September 9, 2010 robbery of the Chase Bank, located at 3330 Piedmont Road, Atlanta, Georgia.

Abdul Khaliq Amin, age 52, was arrested after an FBI SWAT entry was made at a Decatur, Georgia residence earlier this morning.  A crucial tip from a viewer of a local area television station broadcasting photographs of the robber prior to donning his robbery mask was considered instrumental in today’s arrest.

Amin will have his initial appearance before a U.S.

Want to Run in Atlanta's Half Marathon this Thanksgiving? Train with a Coach Now

Atlanta, GA-- For those runners who will be running in the Atlanta Half Marathon on Thanksgiving morning, Coach Will Dillard, along with Fleet Feet Sports Atlanta, will have a training program designed specifically for intermediate and veteran runners.

An informational meeting and sign up will be at Fleet Feet Sports Atlanta on Sunday, September 12th at 3:00 p.m., and group runs begin Saturday, September 18th.

The cost of the program is $99.00 and will include the following: Ten Saturday group runs from various locations with optional Wednesday training runs beginning October 6th, a detailed written schedule, seminars on injury prevention and nutrition, access to Coach Will at the runs and by email for training questions, weekly email training tips, a long sleeve technical tee for race day, and socks and other goodies from program sponsors.

DeKalb County Reports First Human Case of West Nile Virus

DECATUR, GA -- The DeKalb County Board of Health reports its first human case of West Nile Virus in the county. This is the fifth human case in Georgia. The individual is a 39-year-old male who lives in Decatur and is currently in the hospital with some paralysis.

As of August 31, 26 states have reported 177 cases to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"It is very unfortunate that one of our DeKalb residents has developed West Nile Virus. However, I hope this will remind everyone to continue using precautions to avoid mosquito bites," said S. Elizabeth Ford, M.D., M.B.A., District Health Director of the DeKalb County Board of Health.

The DeKalb County Board of Health advises people to take the following precautions againist being bitten by mosquitoes:

* Reduce outdoor exposure at dawn and dusk, when the mosquitoes that transmit West Nile Virus are most active.

Bishop Eddie Long Provides Financial Support to South African HIV/AIDS Hospice

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA. August 21, 2010 – New Birth Missionary Baptist Church Senior Pastor, Bishop Eddie L. Long, has partnered with the South African Caritas Care Home, a hospice facility for victims of HIV and AIDS. Bishop Long’s donation of 73,500 rand, which is the equivalent of 10-thousand dollars, provides immediate assistance to the struggling hospice that does not receive any assistance from government of South Africa. The facility is open, free of charge to victims of this potentially deadly disease. It currently houses 60 children, most of which are orphans, and 18 adults.
