Weekend roadwork: More of the same

(WXIA) -- Georgia Department of Transportation crews will work in all the usual problem areas this weekend.

Drivers are asked to avoid Interstate 285 if possible, as construction projects will be performed on several stretches of that road.

As always, all weekend roadwork is weather permitting.

Scheduled projects include:

Cobb County
2 northbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between Paces Ferry Road and Cobb Parkway from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday for sign structure work.

Cobb/Fulton counties
3 westbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between New Northside Drive and I-75 from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday for sign structure work.

Cobb/Fulton counties
2 northbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between Bolton Road and South Cobb Drive from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for concrete rehabilitation.

Teen indicted for killing woman at MARTA bus stop

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- An 18-year-old man was indicted for shooting a woman to death at a MARTA bus stop in DeKalb County.

Christopher Merritt has been charged with malice murder, felony murder, armed robbery and aggravated assault in the death of 19-year-old Marcaysia Dawkins.

The shooting happened Nov. 23, 2014, while Dawkins waited for the bus at the Fairington Road stop in Lithonia. Merritt approached and tried to steal her purse; when she fought back, he shot her twice and then ran off with her belongings.

Chick-fil-A to host Daddy-Daughter Date Night

(WXIA) -- Chick-fil-A will bring back its popular Daddy-Daughter Date Night this weekend.

The fifth annual event will be Saturday, Feb. 7 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at participating restaurants.

Daddy-Daughter Date Night encourages fathers and their little girls to spend time together. Every "couple" will receive take-home booklets featuring conversation starters and ideas for future outings.

Attendees will also be treated to tableside service, limousine and trolley rides, and other surprises.

Daddy-Daughter Date Night is free, except for the cost of food. Seating is available every hour; fathers and daughters are encouraged to call their local Chick-fil-A locations in advance to reserve a time.

Blood donation opportunities: DeKalb County

(WXIA) -- The American Red Cross needs blood donations and has provided healthy metro Atlanta residents with several opportunities to give.

Inclement weather and widespread flu have prevented many usual donors from giving, according to Red Cross spokesperson Kristen Stancil. Several blood drives will be held throughout the area this month to make up the difference.

The Red Cross especially needs blood types O negative, A negative and B negative.

DeKalb County authorities are looking for a stolen school bus taken over the weekend


STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- DeKalb County authorities are looking for a stolen school bus taken over the weekend

Police believe whoever took the bus also caused an estimated tens of thousands of dollars in vandalism to 10 school buses.

The damaged buses have busted radiators, ripped bus stop arms and severely scraped sides.

The buses are useless until they are repaired and now sit in the DeKalb County Schools' bus yard near the Panthersville Road transportation center.

Authorities are still investigating how the thief (or thieves) gained access to the buses and when. There are cameras monitoring the front of the property, but not in the back where the buses were taken.

Schools, businesses donate to Fairington after fire


LITHONIA, Ga. -- Students and staff at Fairington Elementary School were treated to a special delivery of books and supplies to replace those destroyed in a fire two weeks ago.

Parents and students from Dunwoody Elementary School brought dozens of boxes filled crayons, paper, scissors, glue and notebooks.

Fairington's media center was filled with supplies from other donors, including Centennial Arts Academy in Gainesville, the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice and MasTec Network Solutions.

(WXIA) -- The Georgia Department of Transportation has a number of Atlanta-area construction projects on its schedule this weekend.

Drivers are asked to avoid traveling on certain stretches of Interstate 285, as lane closures are expected to result in long delays.

As always, all weekend work is weather permitting.

Scheduled projects include:

2 northbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between Paces Ferry Road and Cobb Parkway from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday for sign structure work.

DeKalb County
2 westbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between Northlake Parkway and Chamblee Tucker Road from 7:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for sign structure work.

Fulton County
2 lanes in each direction of I-285 will be closed between Cascade Road and the I-20 interchange from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for sign structure work.
